• Best for seeing humpbacks up close: the Eye-Level Whale Watch Tour, a focused 90-minute or 2-hour whale watch and our most popular trip. It puts all your time toward whales, and the low-to-the-water raft means humpbacks that approach are right at your level.
• Best for whales and snorkeling together: the 2n1 Maui Turtle Snorkeling & Whale Watching Tour. This 4-or-5-hour combo pairs whale watching with beginner-friendly snorkeling, so you see humpbacks and swim the reef in one trip instead of booking two. Lifeguard-guides and flotation support make it good for first-time snorkelers.
• Best for a relaxed, stay-dry cruise: the Maui Dolphin Tour & Whale Search, a 2-hour sightseeing trip. It’s the most relaxed and lowest-cost option, and it searches for dolphins year-round, plus whales in the shoulder season (when the dedicated whale tours aren’t running).

Check-in is currently at our temporary location: Dive Maui Shop, 1223 Front Street, Lāhainā, Maui 96761. Parking is available on Front Street or near the Lāhainā Cannery Mall. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Your confirmation email will include the most current check-in instructions — if anything changes, we’ll reach out directly.

Yes — every Hawaii Ocean Rafting tour is a small-group, semi-private experience. Smaller groups mean more space, better wildlife views, and a relaxed, family-style atmosphere you won’t find on a large commercial boat.

Every tour includes a marine naturalist who shares whale behavior, migration facts, and Hawaiian ocean knowledge along the way, plus a certified crew on board. Depending on the tour, you’ll also get snacks and beverages, and snorkel tours include full gear (masks, snorkels, and fins in all sizes) with in-water guidance. We provide complimentary rain ponchos on whale watching tours. Just bring sun protection, a water-resistant layer, and a dry bag for your phone and keys — we’ll handle the rest.

Departing from Lāhainā helps — the West Maui mountains shelter the coast from trade winds, so conditions are often calmer than other parts of the island, especially on morning departures. Our rafts sit low to the water, which many people find easier than a tall boat that rocks more. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take a non-drowsy remedy about an hour before your tour, get good rest the night before, eat a light meal, and keep your eyes on the horizon. The rafts are small and low-impact; we follow reef-safe practices and federal wildlife regulations, and small groups keep each trip low-disturbance for the whales. Expect a little spray, and sometimes more. Our rafts sit low to the water, so ocean spray comes with the adventure, especially on the ride out. Sometimes we encounter tropical rain on our tours as well. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and anything that shouldn’t get damp, and dress in layers you don’t mind getting wet. • 2n1 Maui Turtle Snorkeling & Whale Watching Tour — a 4- or 5-hour trip that pairs whale watching with beginner-friendly snorkeling, so you can watch humpbacks and get in the water with turtles and reef fish on the same outing.
• Maui Dolphin Tour & Whale Search — a stay-dry 2-hour sightseeing trip that searches for dolphins year-round and whales in the shoulder season.

All of our tours depart from Lāhainā on Maui’s west coast. Lāhainā sits in the lee of the West Maui mountains, which means more protected, often calmer water and quick access to the Auʻau Channel — the heart of Maui’s whale watching grounds and the crossing toward Lānaʻi for snorkeling. Small groups and a local crew make each tour feel family-style, the way we mean “ohana.” Check-in is currently at our temporary Lāhainā location; your confirmation email will have the latest details.

If you don’t see a humpback on our Eye-Level Whale Watch Tour during peak season, December through April, you can go again free. Sightings are all but certain in those months, when thousands of humpbacks fill the Auʻau Channel, but they are wild animals, so the guarantee makes your trip risk-free.

A few details:

• The guarantee applies only to our December–April Eye-Level Whale Watch Tour.
• If no humpback is sighted on this tour, you book another whale watching tour at no charge rather than receiving a refund.
• This offer does not apply to the 2n1 Maui Turtle Snorkeling & Whale Watching Tour and the off-season Maui Dolphin Tour & Whale Search, since those trips include other activities or run outside peak whale season.

Every Hawaii Ocean Rafting whale watching tour includes the essentials for a small-group day on the water:

Yes. Our small-group eco-raft tours are a family-style experience, and the calm, low-to-the-water ride makes whale watching easy for most kids. Age minimums vary by tour:

• Ages 3 and up: the Eye-Level Whale Watch Tour and the Maui Dolphin Tour & Whale Search
• Ages 4 and up: the 2n1 Maui Turtle Snorkeling & Whale Watching Tour, since it includes snorkeling

A few things that make our raft tours manageable for families: small groups mean kids get a clear view and room to move, and our marine naturalists keep younger guests engaged with whale facts and hydrophone listening. One important restriction: for safety, pregnant guests cannot join any tour because of the adventure-style ride, and guests with back or neck injuries should also sit these tours out for the same reason.

Pack light and plan to get a little wet. Our low-to-the-water eco-rafts take on ocean spray, so bring the essentials and leave anything that can’t get damp behind:

Check in at the Dive Maui Shop, 1223 Front Street, Lāhainā (next to Snorkel Bob’s blue building), 30 minutes before your departure time. Tours launch from the nearby Mala Boat Ramp, and our crew takes all guests over to the boat after check-in.

• Parking: Park near the Lāhainā Cannery Mall (Safeway shopping center) or on Front Street. Then walk toward the ocean to Front Street, go south over the bridge, and the Dive Maui Shop is on the right before the blue building. Some roads in the area are still closed, so give yourself extra time. There is no longer commercial parking at Mala Boat Ramp.
• Check-in: Dive Maui Shop, 1223 Front Street, Lāhainā. Arrive 30 minutes early to sign waivers and get your boarding pass. Restrooms and water are available, plus hats, sun shirts, and dry bags for purchase.
• Departure: Our crew will take you to Mala Boat Ramp for boarding and departure, which is also where the tour returns.

This is a temporary check-in location while Lāhainā continues to rebuild after the 2023 wildfires. Your confirmation email will always have the most current details.

Here’s what you unlock at each milestone:

• 25 tours: a 25 award pin and 1 free whale watching tour

We also offer our Ali’i Whale Watch Pass, a weekly or monthly pass you purchase up front to enjoy tours at a reduced rate throughout your visit or season. It’s a favorite with long-stay visitors, frequent whale watchers, and Maui locals, and every tour you take on a pass still counts toward your rewards milestones.

To receive a refund or reschedule, cancel at least 24 hours before your tour (72 hours for parties of 5 or more; 7 days for private charters). Cancellations inside that window are charged the full tour price. Because we’re a small-group operation with strict Coast Guard, county, and insurance limits on daily guest counts, we can’t absorb last-minute cancellations.

• How to cancel: call (808) 661-7238 or email reservations@hawaiioceanrafting.com. A staff member must confirm your cancellation before it’s accepted.
• Notice required: 24 hours (standard), 72 hours (parties of 5+), 7 days (private charters). Late notice is charged a 100% cancellation fee.
• Late arrivals and no-shows are charged the full price. Our tours depart on time, and Lāhainā construction can cause traffic delays, so plan to arrive early.
• Health cancellations require a doctor’s note within the policy window.
• Eligibility: guests must follow tour guidelines (age minimums, no pregnant guests, and the ability to board unassisted; see our family and safety details above). We do not offer refunds when guests don’t meet these guidelines and cannot be taken on the tour, so please review them before booking.
• Weather and capacity: we may cancel or reschedule a tour due to weather, capacity, or other circumstances. If we cancel, you’ll receive a full refund or credit.

This cancellation policy supersedes any prior agreements with your credit card company.

We know guests often have a favorite whale tour captain or naturalist from a past trip. We publish a seasonal crew schedule, so you’re welcome to contact us to check who’s expected on a given day before you book. Keep in mind the schedule can change without notice, and we can’t guarantee a specific crew member will be aboard, since illness and last-minute changes happen. Our crew rotates across all our rafts through the season, so you’re in great hands whoever you tour with.

Yes. All of our ocean tours welcome guests ages 3 and up. Our eco-rafts are stable, low-to-the-water vessels, and life jackets are available in case of emergencies. Certified lifeguard crew members are on board for every tour. We recommend the Kuokoa Kai or Aloha Kauwela rafts for families with young children, as the beach-style seating and 80% shade coverage offer the most comfort. Our marine naturalists love working with kids — the educational narration makes the experience as engaging for younger guests as anyone. Private charters are available to book if you have infants you would like to include in your ocean experience.

A private boat charter gives you and your group exclusive use of the vessel — no outside guests. You choose the activity, the duration, and the pace of your adventure. Whether it’s snorkeling, whale watching, dolphin searching, or a celebration on the water, everything is tailored to your group.

Private charters are ideal for families, friend groups, special occasions, and anyone looking for a more intimate and flexible ocean experience. We’ve been sharing Maui’s waters with visitors for over 30 years and can’t wait for you to feel like ohana.

If you have a group of family or friends looking for adventure and flexibility, a private charter is likely the best fit. For larger groups, a private charter is often more affordable per person than booking individual seats on a shared tour.

Private charters are also the best option if you want more space on the boat, the ability to adjust your itinerary on the fly, or if you’re planning drone filming over the ocean (federal airspace restrictions apply near humpback whales — our crew can guide you).

Our rigid-hull inflatable eco-rafts do not have restrooms onboard. However, our check-in location offers restroom facilities and purified water for all guests before departure. There are also restrooms nearby at Safeway and the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Due to the adventurous nature of our vessels and ocean conditions, private charters are not recommended for guests who are pregnant or have back or neck injuries. All ages are welcome on private charters, including infants.

Please use rub-on reef-safe sunscreen only — no spray sunscreen is allowed onboard. For cancellations and refunds, please contact us at least 7 days prior to your scheduled tour.

Tours may occasionally be cancelled or rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. In those cases, we will contact you and issue a full refund.

Private charters can be booked for a variety of ocean activities:

• Snorkeling: Maui coastal snorkeling or Lanai snorkeling tours, from 3 to 6 hours
• Whale Watching: Available December through April during humpback migration season
• Dolphin Searching: Year-round dolphin watch excursions
• Sightseeing: Cruise the West Maui coastline at your own pace
• Celebrations: Birthdays, small weddings, family reunions, and other special occasions

During whale season (December–April), whale watching can be combined with snorkeling for a combo ocean rafting adventure.

Our private charters operate on an hourly rate that varies by vessel size and capacity. Smaller vessels offer a lower hourly price point, with rates increasing as boat capacity and size increase.

The charter price includes your captain, crew, and snorkel gear (for snorkel tours). Catering options are available as an upgrade, or you’re welcome to bring your own food and beverages onboard — we can provide a cooler and ice.

Morning tours usually have the calmest seas and clearest visibility if you are whale watching anywhere else on Maui, but Lahaina offers consistent weather throughout the day. Swimming or snorkeling with humpback whales is not permitted under federal law in Hawaii. Humpbacks are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the approach regulations require vessels to maintain a safe distance. That said, our small eco-rafts create a very different experience from a large tour boat. Because we’re low and quiet on the water, whales will sometimes approach us on their own terms — an encounter called “mugging.” Close approaches happen when the whale chooses it. That’s what makes every tour different.

Northern Pacific humpback whales migrate back to Alaska in May, so summer whale watching in Maui isn’t typically possible from June through October. If you’re visiting in summer and want to experience ocean wildlife, our Dolphin Watching Tours run year-round from Lāhainā. Maui is home to several resident dolphin species — including spinner, spotted, and bottlenose dolphins — and they’re on the water every season. Summer is also peak season for our Lānaʻi Snorkeling & Dolphin Watching Tours, with calm, clear conditions and excellent underwater visibility.

Often, yes. When conditions allow, our marine naturalists lower a hydrophone into the water so you can listen to humpback whale song right from the eco-raft. Male humpbacks are the singers, and their songs are one of the most remarkable parts of Maui’s whale season. Sound carries well underwater, so you may hear whales you can’t yet see. It’s a highlight of the educational, naturalist-led experience that sets a small-group eco-raft tour apart from a large boat.

Absolutely. Our snorkel tours are designed for all experience levels, including people who have never snorkeled before. We provide full equipment — masks, snorkels, and fins in all sizes — along with one-on-one instruction before you enter the water. Flotation devices like float belts are available for anyone who wants extra support. Our crew gets in the water with you, so you’re never snorkeling alone. Our snorkel tours venture to the island of Lānaʻi — a private island about 8 miles from Maui across the Au’au Channel. Lānaʻi has more than a dozen snorkel sites with clear water, coral reefs, tropical fish, and Hawaiian green sea turtles on nearly every dive. The crossing itself often includes dolphin sightings, as spinner dolphins are a regular presence in the channel. We rotate spots based on conditions each day, so no two tours look exactly alike.

On most tours, guests snorkel alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles and a wide variety of tropical reef fish. Spinner dolphins are often spotted on the water crossing to Lānaʻi — you’ll watch them from the raft, since swimming with spinner dolphins isn’t permitted under federal wildlife protection law. On rare occasions, we’ve also spotted whale sharks, Hawaiian monk seals, manta rays, octopus, reef sharks, and false killer whales. Every tour is different, and every ocean day offers something new.

Our Maui dolphin tours are stay-dry sightseeing trips focused on searching for dolphins from the raft, while our snorkel tours include in-water time at Lānaʻi’s reefs with turtles and tropical fish. Our Lānaʻi Snorkel & Dolphin Watch combines both.

We provide high-quality masks, snorkels, and fins in all sizes as part of your tour. Prescription masks are available upon request — let us know in advance so we can have the right one ready. We also carry flotation aids for guests who want them. All equipment is cleaned and inspected before each tour. You’re welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer it, just no full-faced mask due to safety hazards.
