Our small group boat tours depart daily from Lahaina Harbor and explore the Auau Channel in search of Hawaii’s humpback whales in front of historic Lahaina town!
Our tours are 16 guests or less, so every seat is a front row experience with first class views of Lahaina’s humpback whales! Listen to the humpback whale’s song using our onboard hydrophones on every whale watch tour!

What to Expect

What kind of whale encounters can we expect?
We guarantee whale sighting or you get to go again for FREE!
Finding active humpback whales can be challenging for inexperienced Captains. Lucky for us our seasoned captains and marine naturalists have decades of combined experience and their extensive knowledge of whale behavior offers you the best opportunities for observing active whales in front of Lahaina! While navigating the warm waters in front of Lahaina, some of the whale behavior you may witness includes spouting, fluking (whale tails), mom and calf intimacy, pectoral fin slapping, competition pods, and the world famous whale breach! Every so often a humpback whale may approach our low to the water boats within the federal 100 yard limit and check us out! When this happens, we call it a mugging! Every tour encounter may be different, but one thing never changes: Watching these 40 foot, 40 ton majestic humpback whales in front of Lahaina is the experience of a lifetime!

When do we whale watch?
Seasonal migration of the northern Pacific humpback whales begins in the later half of fall and concludes in the middle of spring. In our expert experience, we find there to be enough humpback whales present in front of Lahaina to start offering tours in December and extend into April! Since active humpback whale behavior happens 24 hours a day, our flexible tour schedule conveniently departing from Lahaina harbor has a time that will fit into your vaca- tion schedule.

What kind of whales do we see whale watching?
While northern pacific humpback whales are the main focus of our whale watching tours, there is always a chance that we may catch a glimpse of other wildlife such as dolphins, toothed whales like false killer whales, and even other rare whales like fin whales!

What to Bring
Sun protection is a must in Lahaina. Because “Lahaina” in Hawaiian translates to “musilus sun”. we recommend sunglasses, reef safe sunscreen, a hat, and a sun shirt or light jacket for those sunny days and the occasional tropical cloud cover! The most important thing you should bring is smartphone, gopro, or a professional DSLR camera! You don’t want to miss out on capturing these once in a lifetime whale watching moments!
We offer purified water onboard all of our whale watch tours. We welcome you to bring other beverages or snacks with you, just no glass containers since we offer barefoot char- ters. Your shoes will be stowed at our booth before departing Lahaina harbor.

FAQ

When is the Best Time of Day for Whale Watching?
Honestly, there is no bad time to whale watch. Since whales go through periods of activity and rest 24 hours a day, it’s just a matter of finding active whales during your whale watch- ing tour. Whale activity can change at a moment’s notice and our expert captains and marine naturalists use their seasoned experience to locate the most promising whales during your whale watching tour!

What is the best weather for Whale Watching in Maui?
Although there are lots of options for whale watching tours, Lahaina offers the most consis- tently nice weather in the state of Hawaii! The warm waters in front of Lahaina are the last to experience wind due to the lee created from the West Maui Mountains. Even when every- where else on Maui is windy, Lahaina can still be offering calm waters to observe our hump- back whales! Forecasting the weather accurately here is nearly impossible due to the multi- climates on island and elevation changes between the island and the ocean! Even our local weather man is more consistently wrong than right! Because of all these variables, we rarely take into account forecast further out than 24 hours. We assess multiple weather sites and combine that with our years of firsthand experience on the waters in front of Lahaina to interpret the ever changing conditions and determing if the weather will be suitable for our whale watching tours!.

Can we swim or snorkel with whales?
Our humpback whales are federally protected in Hawaii. Intentionally approaching whales closer than federal regulations violates the Marine Mammal Protection Act and is considered harassment. Unfortunately this includes swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, boating or any other means of propulsion. However, since we are a small rafting vessel, our presence in the water may cause whales to become curious and swim up to the boat! In the rare event that this happens, you will have the opportunity to witness what we call a whale mugging! Because of the favorable, shallow water depths in front of Lahaina, humpback whales seek out this area as their main Hawaiian destination!

When is the best time of year for whale watching in Lahaina?
During the winter months, from December through April Northern Pacific Humpback Whales migrate to Hawaii to mate and give birth. Although Northern Pacific Humpback Whales come and go throughout the winter season, the highest population of whales can be found in front of Lahaina between January and March. We start seeing the first early arrivals in October and November but don’t feel as though there’s enough whales present until Decem- ber to officially begin whale watching. Our whale watching tours run daily out of Lahaina Harbor through April. We offer multiple whale watching tours daily from Lahaina so select the one that fits your vacation schedule!

What kind of whale encounters can we expect?
While navigating the warm waters in front of Lahaina, some of the whale behavior you may witness includes spouting, fluking (whale tails), mom and calf intimacy, pectoral fin slapping, competition pods, and the world famous breach! Every so often a humpback whale may approach our low to the water boats within the federal 100 yard limit and check us out! When this happens, we call it a mugging! Every tour will be different based on the whales we encounter, but one thing never changes : Watching these 40 foot, 40 ton majestic hump- back whales in front of Lahaina is the experience of a lifetime!

What kind of whales do we see whale watching?
The primary whales we encounter during our whale watches are Northern Pacific Humpback Whales. However there’s always a chance that we see something else. Everyday on the water is different from the last and other rare animals we may encounter include multiple dolphin species and larger toothed whales like false killer whales.

Can I book more than one whale watch tour?
Yes! Y can book as many whale watches as you wish! Book your first whale watching tour with us and for every repeat whale watching tour the rest of the season you’ll receive a discount!

Highlight of our trip!

We just finished our tour. It was amazing! Captain Sean and first mate Paul took us out to see a fantastic collection of ocean delights. We saw fish, a huge pod of over a hundred dolphins, sea turtles, and more. Our crew was really helpful and had great stories and knowledge of the sea and the area-like straight out of a Hemingway novel. We really liked the small boat setting where you got individual attention. The crew were fascinating, fun, and focused on safety. We have done a number of outings this trip but this was by far the best. We took our three kids ages 11-15 and they totally loved it. Have this be the first thing you book on your trip.

BEST Snorkeling EVER!!!

We were fortunate enough to take a ride with Sean and Stephanie on a chance of a lifetime snorkeling trip! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They took us to a coral reef that was the most BEAUTIFUL thing we have ever seen! Sooooo many fish and the reef was unexplainable…BEAUTIFUL! They took us to see the dolphins, hundreds of them surrounding our boat! You could reach out and pet them! They took us to whale watch, we saw a whale spout twice! The boat is fast and fun and takes the waves like butter! The breakfast and lunch were included and very yummy! We will never forget that trip! Thank you, Hawaii Ocean Rafting!
